Artist Dimitri Permiakov Video

Though I didn’t create this film, I did shoot a lot of the footage contained within it, as a freelancer for Spike Productions and Art for Guernsey.

Dimitri Permiakov is a fascinating artist who paints incredibly quickly, which makes filming the detail of his work quite difficult as his brush flies around the canvas. The best way I found to capture him working was to handhold the camera on a gimbal, allowing me to reposition quickly, and to watch him closely, trying to anticipate where on the canvas his brush would land next, or which colour he would pick up from his palette. The time-lapse sequence running throughout this video, captures one of Dimitri’s paintings develop from start-to-finish in less than 30 minutes.

Dan filming Dimitri Permiakov at Moulin Huet Bay

An exhibition of Dimitri’s latest work, focussing on Moulin Huet Bay and its surroundings, itself made famous by French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, runs until the end of August at the Bella Luce hotel and I would highly recommend a visit. While you’re there, you could also stroll down the hill to Moulin Huet and follow Art for Guernsey’s highly-praised Renoir walk.
